SECRET ABOUT BOOK COVERS IN THE ADAM DRAKE SERIES

In the process of releasing the next book in the Adam Drake series, CALL IT TREASON, which should be out next week, I was reminded that not everyone knew the secret about my book covers. Amazon and Kindle and CreateSpace obviously don’t, because the keep rejecting the covers the first time they’re reviewed. The problem, they say, is the faint writing on the cover that sometimes overlaps/runs against the title and author’s name. Here, take a look and see if you can spot the problem they’re talking about. Look at the cover on THE ASSASSIN’S LIST. . See the scribbling down the cover. Okay, now look at the cover for OATH TO DEFEND and DARK TREASON. Each of these book covers has a hidden message for fans of the Adam Drake series. For THE ASSASSIN’S LIST, the faint writing on the cover is the actual list of intended kills the assassins were planning. For OATH TO DEFEND, the writing is the formula for an atomic bomb. And for DARK TROJAN, the cascading binary symbols represent the coding the terrorists plan to use to collapse our energy grid. There, the secret’s out! I hope that’s the end of the problems I keep having with the covers on my books. p.s. The cover for CALL IT TREASON, out next week also has a secret writing. Can you tell me what it is?      ...

DARK TROJAN and WINTER WEATHER

Last week was cold in Oregon, but nothing like the cold in Chicago and elsewhere in mid-America and the east coast. Which got me thinking, what if the blackout that terrorists are plotting in my latest Adam Drake novel, DARK TROJAN, happened during a prolonged arctic cold snap? Survival without electricity is difficult any time of the year, with food supplies disappearing, travel and communications limited and people panicking. But what if the lights go out for months when it’s freezing outside? Survival would be difficult for most of us, unless we were prepared. Which brings me to the post of Bob Mayer titled “Survival Friday: Cold Weather Survival” I want you to read.http://bit.ly/1iaNiql. Bob Mayer was a Green Beret and one of his books is titled THE GREEEN BERET SURVIVAL GUIDE. It’s well worth your time to get a copy after you’ve read his post on cold weather survival. So heed Bob’s advice and be prepared for the catastrophe I fictionalize in DARK TROJAN, available now on...

The “what if” of THE ASSASSIN’S LIST

Readers often ask where the idea for a story comes from; do you start with “what if…” and work from there, or wake up one morning with the plot for a novel lingering from a dream you had. In my case, it’s a little of both. My first novel, THE ASSASSIN’S LIST (http://amzn.to/1poAWz0} is about a terror plot to assassinate American leaders in retaliation for jihadist leaders killed by drone strikes. The way the terrorists might accomplish these assassinations was a bit of a problem for me, having no training or experience as a terrorist. But I do read and research a lot, and two items I’d come across kept swirling around in my head. The first was an article in 2007 about blacks being recruited for terror by al-Qaida (http://bit.ly/UIKx8v). Al-Qaida’s Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri in a videotaped message had called for black Muslims in America to rise up against oppression and, if they didn’t, they would be considered no better than “house slaves”. Al-Zawahiri’s goal was to recruit blacks for terror cells, primarily from our prisons, who could travel freely when released in America, and also to sow political and racial discontent in the country. The second item was the Justice Department’s criminal complaint in 2011 that alleged a bold plot by Iran’s Qods Force leaders to assassinate the Saudi Arabian Ambassador to the United States while he was in a restaurant in Washington, D.C. (http://bit.ly/1s1Fz36). Assassination was clearly a tool that was still in vogue in the Middle East. With those two events, the speech and the planned assassination, to work with, the “what if” went like...

A Blink Of An Eye

In a blink of an eye, mine, almost a year has passed since I last posted anything here. I could say the reason for my absence has been the two new books I’ve been writing for the Adam Drake series, POWER PLAY and CALL IT TREASON. That’s partially true, but the main reason is I never really got hooked by the blogging bug and usually I can’t think of anything to write about. But a number of you that know how to reach me have asked when you’ll get to read another Adam Drake political thriller. And that has convinced me that I need to do a better job of keeping you informed about the series, when books three and four will be released and what’s on the drawing board for the near future. The third book, POWER PLAY, is currently being edited and should be released later this summer. It’s set in San Francisco and deals with cyber terrorism and a couple of green energy CEO’s desperate to save their failing companies. Their greedy plan is hijacked and taken over by a man who fashions it into the deadliest attack on America since 9/11. The manuscript for the fourth book, CALL IT TREASON, is finished and waiting in line for the polishing touch of my editor. It’s set in Washington, D.C., and involves the Muslim Brotherhood’s infiltration of our government and the corrupt power brokers and politicians who betray us. The plan is for book four in the series to be out before Christmas. I’m working on a fifth adventure for Drake that takes him to Nicaragua and...

Why “Patriots” Are Targeted

It’s Sunday before the 4th of July and I’ve been getting ready to drive to my Mother’s on the coast for the holiday. It’s a family reunion and, with the variety of opinions we have, politics is a topic verbotem. But I know I’m going to have trouble containing myself with all the recent IRS revelations. I am more than a little troubled with the targeting of “Patriot” groups. I’ve always considered myself a Patriot. A “Patriot” is defined as “one who loves, supports and defends his country”. So why wasn’t I on the Administration’s list of targets? Why were nonprofit groups with the name “Patriot” targeted? Why weren’t all Americans who considered themselves to be “Patriots” targeted? If the government is listening to our phone calls, emails and internet communications, shouldn’t we all be on the list? So I took a look at the word “patriot” to help me understand. I learned that by the 1600’s the word “patriot” had come to mean a “disturber of government”. By 1744, in fact, the word “patriot” was understood to be a word of derision, that not being loyal to the Crown was considered to be immoral. Sound a little like today? Okay, a lot like today. Our Founding Fathers were called “Patriots” because they were not “loyal” to the government that oppressed them, spied on them and had authority to search their homes without warrant. They were “disturbers” or, if you like, citizens who questioned and were not loyal to the policies of the king and his government. These were the Founders of our country, who gave us the Idea...

Chris Dorner a ‘super hero’; really?

I write thrillers and most thrillers have heroes we root for, fictional characters who take selfless risks to save the world or a victim or victims of some injustice. They’re imaginary heroes that do things like Todd Beamer did when he led passengers on Flight 93 with his rallying cry “Let’s roll”. So when I hear a professor from Columbia University cheapen the memory of his heroism by calling Chris Dorner a kind of ‘super hero’ I want to throw up. Dorner was a deranged murderer and deserves to be condemned by every last one of us. But unfortunately that is not the America we live in today. The Facebook page “I Support Christopher Jordan Dorner” had 16. 263 likes when I checked. At the same time the memorial page for Tyrone S. Woods had 6,052 likes. You remember Tyrone Woods, he was the former SEAL who died trying to rescue Ambassador Chris Stevens in Benghazi. We haven’t heard a lot about Tyrone Woods or any of the other real heroes lately because today’s heroes aren’t celebrated for the merit of their deeds. Today’s heroes are celebrated for their ‘victim status’. Chris Dorner can be a ‘super hero’ to Professor Mark Lamont Hill because he professed to be a victim of a corrupt and racist police department. Dr. Gerald L. Atkinson observed in an article entitled “Who Chooses Our ‘Heroes’ in the Age of ‘Multiculturalism?” that “The New Age ‘hero’ is now a person who is chosen from a politically selected ‘victim group’ and placed in a position of honor. It is by this means that the agents of...
